New toy, like sunglasses for your camera

I read a few weeks ago about using ultra dark camera filters in order to do daylight long exposures. Well, i’ve been thinking about it for a while and decided to splurge. So, here it is.

Yup, a Hoya ND400 filter. 9 full stops of light killing power. This thing is dark. Should be a bit of fun to play around with.

Hoya say that :

Photographing solar eclipses and ultra-bright light sources can be extremely dangerous. This filter reduces light values by 9 stops to less than 1/500th of its original intensity and allows safe photography. It can also be used to achieve super slow shutter speeds in daylight to render moving subjects invisible.

Lets hope the sun comes out tomorrow so I can blot it out with this beastie.

New toy on the way

The saga of me trying to purchase a GPS unit is coming to a close.

January/February 2009. Travelling on a group tour through India. Dr Nick has a garmin GPS unit and it was both useful and lust-worthy. I decide I want one.

March 2nd, 2009. I jump on Gmarket and order myself a Garming GPSMAP 60CSx for the grand price of W364,000.

May 2009. Until still hasn’t arrived, even after asking the questions of gmarket and the seller. Its begining to fell like a scam. I’m offered a refund minus W80,000. As it was being shipped from the US it sounds like they never shipped it and wanted to pocket my W80,000.

Late May 2009. More phonecalls made to Gmarket, and they agree to refund me in full. They couldn’t track down the seller. Within 5 minutes the money was back in my account.

Later May 2009. Found what I wanted on Amazon. Garmin eTrex Vista HCx. Same feature set as the 60CSx but physically smaller. And cheaper. Ordered it and got it shipped to a mates in Berkeley.

June 3rd 2009. Package arrives in Berkeley. He’ll post it on to me, so I should get it next week or early the following week.

Really I should have done it that way in the first place but gmarket is so simple and this is the first issue I’ve ever had. Still amazing customer service from them. I’d hate to attempt the same with eBay or PayPal.
